Safety rules are of prime importance while working in a laboratory and specially in chemistry laboratory. In chemistry labs one should always follow the safety rules because chemicals used in chemistry labs pose danger to the working professionals. With the help of proper laboratory safety equipments, we can avoid any accidents and casualty.
Here are some of the basic safety rules, which should be followed while working in a chemistry laboratory.
- Most of the accidents in chemistry laboratory happens due to the inappropriate clothing. People spill acid on themselves, notes or others and set themselves on fire. Long and loose clothes are strictly prohibited in labs. Long hairs are supposed to tie back. Lab coat and safety goggles are advised to put on during working in chemistry labs.
- Each chemical you use in lab must be attached with a material safety data sheet (MSDS). We should follow the recommendations for safe use and disposal of the material.
- Never use the pipette with the help of mouth. You might not be aware of the consequences these chemicals can pose on your health. All the laboratory apparatus should be handled properly.
- It is very important to know how to use the lab safety equipments kept in your laboratory. You must know the locations of these equipments like extinguishers, shower, fire blankets, eyewash, etc. All the students must be given demonstrations so that at time of requirement they could act quickly.
- While working with chemicals don’t deviate from the instructions. One should give attention while mixing chemicals. Don’t mix them randomly otherwise it could result in serious consequences.
- There are different methods of disposal for different chemicals. All chemicals shouldn’t be washed down the drain. You must wash away the chemicals in the sink.
- Never eat or drink anything in lab.
- Dont sniff or taste chemicals. Even sniffing of some hazardous chemicals can harm you. If a certain chemical is supposed to be used inside a fume hood then done use it at other places.
